Change MySQL root Password using Command Line in WAMP Server

You can change root password using command line in wampserver or wampmanager, just follow the steps to change the root password.

  • click on wampmanager, go to MySQL and Open the MySQL Console.
  • By default the password in null (means no password). Just hit Enter
  • Run the following sql command.

mysql> update mysql.user SET password=password("new_password") where user="root"; hit enter

Your password updated and you will get Query OK message. Then click on the wampserver (bottom right) which is running in task bar and select Restart All Services.

For security, you might wish to turn off the directory browsing capability on your Apache server.

Click - WAMPSERVER icon in Task bar.

1. Open httpd.conf file.

2. Find keyword - "Indexes"

3. Search result.

which allows the user to browse the directory structure.


4. to turn directory browsing off, I added a "-" in front of Indexes after Options.

5. Finally restart All wampserver Services.

Now the user receives a "403 forbidden" error when attempting to browse the directory structure.

How to Enable .htaccess in Wampserver

If we are using any of the frame works in php like cakephp, simphony or open source tools for CMS like WordPress, Drupal etc, or any other scripts, you need to enable htaccess in wamp server

Internally they depend on .htaccess in many cases.

  1. Click on the wampserver Icon in task bar
  2. Select Apache->httpd.conf

look for the line "#LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so"
un-comment the line "LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so"
Restart All services
